Ronay Island is officially a Northwoods partner
Northwoods partners are a group of small to medium-sized landholdings all committed to nature recovery and share a vision for an ecologically restored landscape, where habitats are better connected and species can recover, expand and disperse.
The group is overseen by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, and we were lucky enough to meet the project lead, James Nairne, recently to join this inspiring and ambitious group.
Northwoods is an expanding, diverse community of land partners across Scotland, who have committed to regenerate some or all of their land in line with the Northwoods Nine principles of rewilding. The network is underpinned by a set of core principles, and Northwoods seeks to demonstrate how environmental projects like ours can drive benefits for nature, climate and people across a range of different scales and settings.
We already have seen the benefits of joining a group of like-minded others as we navigate the complexities of a regeneration project and we look forward to seeing how much more we can achieve in the future.
The key actions we have agreed to undertake over the next five years are:
To increase woodland cover on site by planting native trees in enclosures and by maintaining deer control.
To remove (or repurpose) redundant fencing; and clear human detritus from the coastline.
To remove limited patches of rhododendron ponticum to provide opportunities for native plant species.
Explore opportunities for wild grazing with native cattle
Establish steering group with local community participation, and seek opportunities to use Ronay for educational experiences.
