Renovations of the Ronay house underway

Our regeneration initiative on Ronay Island has always had a strong focus on engagement with the local community. We’ve thought long and hard about how the island can be enjoyed by others, whilst balancing the intricacies of caring for our natural habitats.

The sole house on Ronay Island was built in the 1970s by the former owners of the island for use as a holiday home. It is situated in the stunning location overlooking Bàgh an Tighe Fhraoich with views out to the island of Grimsay and with steep rocky outcrops behind.

Working with our steering committee, we’ve identified opportunities to lend the house to various environmental or cultural based activities led by local groups. The renovations of the house will allow for multifunctional spaces that can be used for Gaelic lessons, nature-based workshops and educational activities, as a bothy for deer stalkers managing the deer population on the island, amongst other ideas.

From the outside, you’ll notice big changes to the house. We’ve begun cladding the exterior in larch, which gives the house a more natural and sympathetic aesthetic. Over time, the larch will fade to a silvery colour which blends in with the surroundings.

Work is still underway over the summer 2025, but we look forward to sharing the final results soon.
